This is an antique Japanese Edo Era (dated 1776) gold Makie lacquer lidded bowl. It was hand turned from cryptomeria wood with over twenty layers of red lacquer. On top of the black lacquer there is a makie (raised gold lacquer) done in the auspicious Crane & Turtle motif. Japanese lacquer is considered the finest in the world.
