This tansu was made in the mid Meiji era (c. 1890's) in the Yonezawa style of all solid Keyaki (Japanese elm) front and case with Sugi (Japanese cedar) interiors. The all Keyaki exterior indicates a very high quality construction. Ishodansu were used to store precious kimono, obi and accessories. This chest can be easily used stacked or separated for side by side use or even as two bedside pieces.
