This is a fine professional grade Hocho (包丁) from Seki Magoroku sushi chef's knife from the mid to late 20th century

It measures approximately 9" tall by 8" long and 7" deep

The wear has smoothed down the sides of the tsuba where it rubbed up against the obi belt from daily wear as well as wear where the thumb would pop the seal between the saya and the habaki

This would have been used by individuals in positions of significant power and influence. Variously believed to have been used as hunting chairs for leaders of the hunting party (Daimyo, General, etc.) and as kyokuroku chairs by Buddhist abbots for meditation seated cross legged. One of the very few types of chairs used in traditional Japan.
