It has ornately figured legs to raise it above the tatami floor where it was used as a small individual table (It is made of cryptomeria wood with over 20 coats of Japanese red and black lacquer. Having been used lovingly and protected in a storage box for over a century, this tray remains overall in very fine condition. Sits squarely.
