According to popular legend, the Dragon Boat Festival (also known as Tuen Ng) originates from the Zhou Dynasty when Qu Yuan, a well known poet, was banished for opposing the King's alliance with an enemy state. In protest, he drowned himself by jumping in the river. The local people, who admired him, raced out in their boats to save him.
