Instituted in 1765 in Poland and adopted in 1831 as an Imperial Russian Order. An 14kt Gold Maltese Cross with ball finials and fans along the outer edges of the arms and with small gilded Russian Imperial eagles in the quadrants between the arms of the cross, the obverse with a central white enamelled medallion bearing a hand painted set of SS lettering surrounded by a green enamelled laurel wreath, the reverse with a matching hand painted white
