Butterfly emblems were particularly fancied by the powerful Taira Clan. It is even said that Taira no Kiyomori himself created the original design of the Agehacho mon. Although warriors of the Taira adorned their garments and equipments with butterflies marks (mon'yo), they rallied under the plain red banner during the Genpei War and did not use the butterfly as kamon yet at that time.
