Instituted on 1 May 1840 by Louis II, Grand Duke of Hesse. 1881 1918 Issue. Type II; Gold and enamels, 48. 5 mm, enamel repair on the obverse centrepiece ring, enamel chipping on the Hesse lion on the reverse centrepiece, near extremely fine.
