Hawksworth was the last Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Great Western Railway (GWR), succeeding Charles Collett in 1941, and his coach designs were the final evolution of passenger stock built by the GWR, being designed at the end of World War Two and entering traffic from 1947 onwards.
