Under the BR TOPS reclassification scheme, it became Class 37 No. 37034 in March 1974. As built, the locomotive had split headcode boxes, which allowed for an end gangway door between them, but these were later removed. In January 1986, it became part of a dedicated heavy freight fleet of 44 locomotives which were given the sub classification 37 7
